Advisory Board
Our Advisory Board is comprised of distinguished current and
former senior executives in a wide variety of industries. The skills
and expertise of our Investment Group are supplemented by access to
our Advisory Board members, who may assume a number of roles in our
investment process.
Arthur H. Bilger Arthur Bilger is the
Managing Member of Shelter Capital Partners, LLC, an entity engaged
in venture capital investment management. From 1995 to 1997, Mr.
Bilger was President, Chief Operating Officer, and a member of the
Board of Directors of New World Communications Group, Inc., a
leading television broadcasting and production company. Prior to
this he was a founding partner of Apollo Advisors, L.P. Mr. Bilger
sits on the Boards of Directors of various companies in which he or
Shelter has investments.
Carl D. Covitz Carl Covitz is owner and
President of Landmark Capital, Inc., a national real estate
development and investment company. He is a former Secretary of the
Business, Transportation and Housing Agency for the State of
California and a former Deputy Secretary and Acting Secretary of the
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He is also
the former Chairman of the Board of the Federal Home Loan Bank of
San Francisco, and he is currently on the Boards of Directors of
Arden Realty Inc., Molina Healthcare, Inc., SunAmerica Annuity
Funds, and the Phoenix Kayne Anderson Mutual Funds.
Steven D. Dorfman Steven Dorfman is the
retired Vice Chairman of Hughes Electronics Corp. During his time at
Hughes, he served as CEO of Hughes Space and Communications Company,
the world's leading builder of communication satellites. He also
served as CEO of Hughes Communications, Inc., a leading owner and
operator of communication satellites and Hughes Telecommunications
and Space, a unit responsible for the above businesses plus the
international development of DirecTV. After retiring from Hughes,
Mr. Dorfman was the Hunsaker Visiting Professor at MIT. Mr. Dorfman
has served on the Boards of Hughes, Raytheon, PanAmSat, American
Mobile Satellite, Galaxy Latin America, JCSAT, DirecTV, Galaxy
Classroom and HRL Laboratories. He is a Trustee of the Devereux
Foundation and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He
has served on advisory committees for NASA, FCC, USIA, Department of
Transportation, USC School of Engineering, the National Research
Council, was a Trustee for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and
was a member of the President's Information Technology Advisory
Committee Council.
Frederick W. Gluck Fred Gluck retired in
1995 from McKinsey & Company, Inc., the international
management-consulting firm, after serving for six years as its
Managing Director. At McKinsey, Mr. Gluck consulted extensively with
U.S., European, and Far East companies, with particular emphasis in
the telecommunications, electronics, heavy-machinery, and healthcare
industries. Under his leadership, McKinsey doubled in size and
greatly expanded its international presence, particularly in Asia
and Latin America. After leaving McKinsey, Mr. Gluck joined Bechtel
Group as Vice Chairman and Director, retiring from there in
1998.
Rick Goings Rick Goings is currently
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Tupperware Corporation. He
has also held executive positions at Premark International, Inc.,
Sara Lee Corporation, and Avon Products, Inc. Currently, Mr. Goings
serves on the Boards of Directors of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings,
Inc., Rollins College and SunTrust Bank, Central Florida, N.A., and
is a member of the Board of Governors of the Boys & Girls Clubs
of America where he is also Vice Chairman. He is the recipient of
the Boys & Girls Clubs of America's most prestigious award, the
Herbert Hoover Humanitarian Award. Additionally the People's
Republic of China recognized Goings with the Marco Polo Award in
March of 2000 for his visionary leadership, his significant role in
China's economic development and concern for Chinese Society. Mr.
Goings received an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration
from Bryant College.
J. Terrence Lanni Terry Lanni was
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MGM MIRAGE. From 1981 to
1995, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Caesar
World, Inc. Mr. Lanni serves as a member of the Board of Directors
of KB Home, The Jim Pattison Group, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club,
the Board of Trustees of The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation,
the Board of Trustees of the UNLV Foundation, University of Nevada,
Las Vegas, the Board of Overseers of the Keck School of Medicine at
the University of Southern California, and the Marshall School of
Business Board of Visitors, University of Southern California.
Sheldon B. Lubar Sheldon Lubar is the
Founder and Chairman of Lubar & Co. a private investment and
venture capital firm. He was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of
the Christiana Companies, Inc. until its merger with Weatherford
International in February 1998. His public service included
Commissioner of the White House Conference on Small Business,
Assistant Secretary of HUD and Commissioner of the Federal Housing
Administration, Director of the Federal National Mortgage
Association, President of the Board of Regents of the University of
Wisconsin System, and Trustee and acting Chairman of the State of
Wisconsin Investment Board. Currently, Mr. Lubar is a Director of
Crosstex Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ), Star Gas Partners (NYSE), Approach
Resources (NASDAQ), Hallador Energy (NASDAQ) and various private
companies. He is also a Trustee of numerous civic organizations. Mr.
Lubar holds degrees in Business Administration and Law from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison and an Honorary Doctorate from the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Harald Ludwig Harald Ludwig is the
Co-Founder and President of Macluan Capital in Vancouver, Canada,
which was formed in 1985 and is a leveraged buyout pioneer in
Canada. He serves on the Boards of various private concerns,
including West Fraser Timber Company and Lion's Gate Entertainment
Corp. Additionally, he maintains strategic relationships with
certain investment banks and funds where he is an investor,
including Thomas Weisel Partners, Credit Suisse/DLJ Partners, and
Transwestern. Mr. Ludwig is a Trustee of Children's Hospital
Foundation and a Patron of the United Way Pathfinders. He is a
graduate of Simon Fraser University and of Osgoode Hall Law
School.
Prof. F. Warren McFarlan Warren McFarlan
is currently Senior Associate Dean, Asia-Pacific Initiative. Mr.
McFarlan is also an active member of the teaching faculty at the
Harvard Business School, a member of the Advisory Committee of
Regional Financial Enterprises, and a Director of Providian
Corporation, Computer Sciences Corporation, and Li & Fung
Limited, a premier global consumer products trading company. He is
an expert in financial controls and data systems.
Richard N. Merkin, M.D. Richard Merkin is
the President, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Heritage
Medical Systems. As a pioneer of the development and management of
physician networks, Dr. Merkin serves on the Boards of over 25
private healthcare organizations and is a consultant to local and
national government healthcare committees. Outside the realm of
healthcare, Dr. Merkin is a participant in numerous philanthropic
activities. He is the founder of the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. He
is on the Board of The Center for Accelerating Medical Solutions, a
medical think-tank, United Friends of the Children and is the Chair
of the California Legislatures Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care
Integrity.
Robert A. Milton Robert Milton has been
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of ACE Aviation
Holdings Inc. (ACE), an investment holding company of various
aviation interests, principally Air Canada, since 2004. ACE has
taken three businesses public: Aeroplan, Air Canada Jazz and Air
Canada. From 2004 until December 2007, Mr. Milton also served as
Chairman of Air Canada. Previously, from 1999 to 2004, he held the
position of President and CEO of Air Canada, having come up through
operations, scheduling, product design, inflight service,
advertising and marketing. In 1996, he was named Air Canada's COO.
He was also founding partner in Air Eagle Holdings Inc. and was an
independent commercial aviation consultant to British Aerospace. Mr.
Milton has served as Chair of the International Air Transport
Association's Board of Governors. He graduated from Georgia
Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Management. He
is past Chairman of the Georgia Tech Advisory Board and currently
serves as a Trustee of the Georgia Tech Foundation.
